STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID

This course is designed for individuals working within educational and student support environments, including academic, administrative, welfare and residential staff. Participants will develop essential knowledge and practical skills to recognise signs of mental health difficulties, respond confidently to students experiencing emotional distress and provide appropriate initial support, helping to promote student wellbeing, early intervention and a supportive learning environment.

Description

This interactive course explores the principles of Mental Health First Aid and their practical application when supporting students within higher education, international education and study abroad environments. Participants will examine common mental health challenges affecting students, including anxiety, depression, stress, adjustment difficulties and emotional distress, while recognising how academic pressures, cultural transitions, social isolation and personal circumstances can influence psychological wellbeing.

The course considers early warning signs, supportive communication, professional boundaries, confidentiality and the importance of recognising situations that require urgent intervention. Through self-reflection, practical exercises, group discussions and realistic student-based scenarios, participants will develop the confidence to approach students sensitively, provide appropriate initial support, respond to potential mental health crises and signpost individuals towards relevant professional services while recognising the limits of their own responsibilities.
